Joanne Louise Knaub Stief

Joanne was born in a farmhouse near Fromberg, Montana on March 7, 1935, the daughter of Henry “Hank” Knaub and Marie Hein Knaub. She moved with the family to various farms around Montana attending grade school in Edgar and Columbus, and graduating from Columbus High School in 1953.

Following graduation, she worked as a secretary/clerk at American Appliance Co. in Billings for two years. On May 22, 1955, she was united in marriage to Robert “Bob” Stief at the Congregational church in Billings. They resided in Laurel until 1958 until she and family moved to Hysham and in 1970 to Big Timber where her husband worked for the Burlington Northern Railroad.

Joanne dearly loved her family and friends. She enjoyed being busy with special interests in sewing, quilting, crocheting, knitting, flower gardens and playing cards (especially bridge). One of her pride and joys was her own hand made collection of 15 crocheted Victorian Costumes for Barbie dolls. She also enjoyed teaching piano for many years in Hysham and Big Timber. Joanne knit baby hats for hospitals in Montana, and she also knit baby sweaters that were sent to orphanages abroad.

The church played a large role in her life. She has taught Sunday School since she was in high school, was the Sunday School superintendent for many years in Big Timber and played the organ at Sunday services and funerals for over 18 years at the Congregational Church. She was a member of Hearts and Hands Hospice in Big Timber beginning in 1988 and served in various ways. Joanne served as president of the Big Timber Community Food Bank for several years, and subsequently held other positions there.

Joanne passed away on April 7 in Big Timber with her family by her side. Survivors include her children Ronald and his wife Sandee of Saint Augustine, Florida, Sheri Booth of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Pamela Hauge of Big Timber, Michael Stief and his wife Amber of Bozeman, grandchildren: Lindsay Minnick and husband Nathan of Bozeman, Jason Hauge and his finance Jamie of Bozeman, Alex Booth of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Melissa Booth of Denver, Colorado, Gary Booth, Jr. of Jacksonville, Florida, Ryan Albaugh and his wife KT of Jacksonville, Florida, great grandchildren: Estella Minnick of Bozeman, Grace and Sophia Albaugh of Jacksonville, Florida. Brother Tom Knaub and his wife Zela of Seattle, Washington, Carolyn Knaub of Portland, Oregon, Fran Knaub of Canyon Lake, California, Gerald Knaub and his wife Susan of Billings, sister: Kathy Grewell and her husband Rick of Silesia, Montana, Numerous nieces, nephews and grand-pups.

Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, April 13, at the Congregational Church in Big Timber, with a reception following at the church.
