Victory for Fiveash, Conner and Bainter

The 2017 school board elections will bring some new and returning faces to the Sweet Grass County High School and Greycliff Rural School boards.

Newly elected Sweet Grass County High School trustee Colleen Conner garnered the most votes in this year’s election with a total of 760. Incumbent trustee Susie Fiveash narrowly beat out candidate Gilbert Prather by a margin of 40 votes with 564 votes to Prather’s 524.

“I was thrilled,” Fiveash said of her win. “I want to thank the residents of Big Timber for casting their vote for me. It’s an honor. I hope I serve them well.”

Conner is a first-year board member who will replace outgoing trustee, Mike Chulyak.

“I’m looking forward to getting involved in the school and the kids and doing my best as a team member on the board,” she said Wednesday morning.

Fiveash will be retaining her seat and Mary Gregorich will be joining the SGHS board to replace Tim Yuzeitis for the Greycliff district on the board, a race which was not contested.

Current Greycliff Rural School trustee Louise Bainter will be retaining her seat as well, and beat the only competitor on the ballot, Amy Newman, by 80 votes.

“We’re just trying to keep (the school) going and improve it as far as the building and playground — we’ve done a lot of work with it,” Bainter said.

The turnout for the election was 51.36 percent, with 1,113 voters participating, consistent with previous mail ballot elections.
