SGHS volleyball bounces rival Columbus

In just the short week-and-change the volleyball team has been competing, the Herders are already starting to show a little spark to what they’re out to accomplish. With three games in the last week, the Herders have come out firing.

Maybe the most anticipated of the three games was the early-season match against conference rival Columbus, who the Herders beat on Saturday, 4-1 (17-25, 27-25, 27-25, 25-18). SGHS also took a loss in the first game of the season to Boulder, 3-0 (25-12, 25-14, 25-8) on Aug. 31 and grabbed their second win in a week against Shields Valley, 3-2 (23-25, 25-11, 18-25, 25-21, 15-8).

After dropping the first set to Columbus, the Herders (1-1, 1-0 Class B, District 5) rallied back, even down 10-5 in the second set, to come away with two tie-breaking sets and the game victory. For head coach Dale Wood, the first victory of the year was a significant and special moment.

“[Saturday] was just an absolute treat,” Wood said. “The girls, they got to a real high, high on the really exciting and positive things. But they didn’t get real defeated at all when we lost that first set. And that’s a good sign for us. Considering how young we are, those kids showed a lot of poise, confidence and togetherness.”

Madilyn Emter led the Herders with 10 kills and had three service aces and a perfect 18-for-18 service. Jolie Wood was right behind with eight kills of her own, three service aces and a 17-for-18 mark from serving.
