Season sweep

Boys, girls basketball win home, away games against Joliet this year

Finn’s 20 points helps Herders in win

It took a little extra work than what should have been necessary, but the boys’ basketball team mustered its way through a clunky and inconsistent game to a 50-41 win against visiting Joliet on Feb. 2.

Blake Finn drained six 3-pointers on his way to his second 20-point game of the year, while Ethan Bullock assisted with 11 more of his own.

The contest had virtually no flow as neither squad could find a rhythm to run with as officiating remained inconsistent for most of the contest. Without an answer, neither Joliet (9-7) nor Big Timber (10-5) found much of an offensive rhythm.

The inconsistency played its biggest role on leading-scorer Kell Schwers, who was held without a single point for the first time all year. With two fouls in the first 1 minute and 46 seconds of the game, and picking up his third with 1:45 left in the first half, Schwers was sidelined for a good portion of the contest.

“There wasn’t [a flow],” said SGHS head coach Dan Smart. “Kell’s been struggling, shot-wise. It’s just been off a little bit. And he was sick yesterday and today. And I talked to him about, if the shot’s not going, do those other things. He’s a good enough passer where he could come out and throw up 20 assists.”

With Schwers out, the Herders didn’t just miss his points. They missed his facilitating, too. Schwers ended up with six assists — a team-high for the game — in his brief appearances. The largest discrepancy came at the free-throw line, where the Herders were 3-for-6 (four total trips) and the J-Hawks were 15-for-23 (11 total trips).

“We pushed the ball well tonight,” Smart said. “Maybe not layup fast breaks, but we got a lot of transition points; a lot of kick outs with Blake for the 3. It’s because we pushed the ball more.”

Big Timber managed 29 points off turnovers and 10 second-chance points.
