School board will hold election for positions

Members of the SGHS school board will hold an election for two open trustee positions on May 8.

Trustees Josh Donald and Jim Niebur will be up for possible re-election by mail ballot after completing three-year terms this spring.

Donald serves as trustee for the Melville School District, while Niebur represents the Big Timber grade school district. The ballot will include a mill levy of approximately $4,000 to cover the cost of the election, and the deadline to file for candidacy is March 29.

If no candidates are filed, the board of trustees may cancel the ballot, including the mill levy. The cancellation deadline is April 6.

Board members approved facility use for youth basketball, which will be held on the first three weekends in March. A spring sports meeting for golf and track will be held on March 11 at 7 p.m.

There are currently 163 students enrolled at SGHS, an increase from 160 students during this time last year, according to superintendent Al Buerkle’s report. The uptick reversed a downward trend in student enrollment in recent years.
