Herders downed early in district tournament

The Sweet Grass County High School volleyball team’s season came to an abrupt end Oct. 27, after two tight matches against Townsend and Manhattan in the District 5 postseason tournament.

The Herders were up 2-0 on Townsend, when the Bulldogs gave a fighting effort, took it to a fifth set and came out victorious, 3-2 (17-15, 21-25, 25-16, 25-17, 15-10).

Later in the afternoon, the Herders got No. 3 seed Manhattan, after it was upset by No. 6 seed Whitehall in the first game of the tournament.

This time, the Herders went back and forth, tying the match at 2-2 but fell in a subsequent fifth set — with extra points — 3-2 (25-27, 25-8, 25-12, 23-25, 16-14).

The first game was led by a furry of attack from both senior Madilyn Emter and sophomore Jolie Wood. Emter had nine kills in the first match, with Wood right behind with eight more.

Defensively, Emter had a stellar afternoon with a team-best 34 digs. Wood and junior Brooklyn Pederson had 22 digs apiece and Rylee Wittrock came in with 17 more.

The second match against Manhattan was much of the same, with Wood leading the way with kills (eight) and Emter with seven more.

Senior Marissa Morgan led the Herders with  16 assists in the second match, and 26 overall in the two games combined. On the season, she had 114 assists, second to Wood’s 147.

Despite the season coming to a quick close, Herder players had milestones of their own along the way.

Emter led her team in kills (110), aces (37) and digs (376). She also tallied 15 assists this season.

The senior hitter will surly be missed along the front row of a Herder team that graduates its leading hitter, second-leading assister (Morgan) and another defensively stout senior in Elle Terland.
