Firefighters fight Fourth of July heat

A cheat grass fire on Bainter Road was sparked Monday morning when the driver of a swather hit a rock.

The incident at 211 Bainter Road was reported to the Sweet Grass County sheriff’s office at 9:16 a.m. and Sweet Grass County Ambulance Service, Big Timber Volunteer Fire Department and the sheriff responded to the scene.

Fire 7 was first on scene at 9:36 a.m., according to dispatch logs, and the fire was reported controlled 14 minutes later after it burned through two acres of grass.

BTVFD Fire Chief Kris Novotny said no structures were threatened. Fires sparked by farming equipment only occur a few times a year, he added, and the only casualty he saw was a dead gardener snake in the burned grass.
